Mozambique

  • Phatisa joined the Vandza team to review operations of high value horticulture export business, and to prepare a new strategic/business plan (February 2009).
  • Finance term sheet relating to Muda Private Growers, Mozambique, in June 2007. Phatisa was engaged by Tongaat Hulett Sugar on behalf of Acucaria de Mocambique to design a financial agreement for use in financing local Mozambican emerging sugar cane out-growers supplying the Mafambisse Sugar Mill.     

Malawi

  • EU delegation team leader on feasibility study for a 3 000 ha expansion of irrigation for sugar cane at Dwangwa in Malawi, to be co-funded by the EU and AFDB (November 2008 to January 2009).

Tanzania

  • Deal: Sale of Tanzania Tea Packers Limited's entire interest in the issued share capital of Chai Bora Limited, Tanzania. Below: deal tombstone 

 

  • SABMiller team leader on mission to Tanzania and Uganda to assess the potential for local barley production for malting, and to prepare a strategy for the development of the commercial farming of the crop (June 2008).
  • Phatisa led a mission to West Kilimanjaro to review a business plan and prepare a due diligence for an Australian fund, Australasian Rural Investments, which was considering investment in a large arable and livestock farm (April 2008).

Swaziland

  • Working paper relating to the IFAD/UNOPS LUSIP Supervision Mission Agricultural Commercialisation (September 2007). Phatisa provided specialist services to assess progress with and propose strategies in support of agricultural commercialisation of smallholder irrigation farmers on the 6 500 ha phase 1 Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation Project in Swaziland.
  • Working paper relating to LUSIP Mid-term Review Agricultural Commercialisation, SWADE (July 2007). Phatisa conducted the mid-term review of the agricultural commercialisation components of small-holder irrigation farmers on the 6,500 ha phase 1 Lower Usuthu Smallholder Irrigation Project in Swaziland.

Zambia

  • Deal: Leveraged buy-out and capital raising for expansion of Yielding Feeds Limited, a Zambian animal feeds business (September 2008). Below: deal tombstone.

  • Agricultural consultant on TechnoServe team, preparing a proposal for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to stimulate local production of soy in Zambia and Mozambique. 

South Africa

  • Report relating to the EIA economic issues of the Dube TradePort Agri Zone (May 2009). Phatisa prepared an agricultural economic assessment of the issues pertaining to the proposed development of a high-care 20 ha controlled environment perishable production centre located in the precinct of the King Shaka International Airport in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Report relating to the assessment of the agri business sector for the Business Trust Shared Growth Challenge Fund (December 2008). Phatisa provided an assessment of the opportunities for the private sector to participate in pro-poor business ventures in the agri business sector, opportunities and proposed design elements for the SGCF in rural South Africa.
  • Business plan relating to Bushbuck Valley Ranch (March 2009). Phatisa prepared a business plan on behalf of the Department of Land Affairs and the owners of the property, previously one of the largest commercial tomato producers in KwaZulu-Natal, for purposes of land reform in the Ubuhlebezwe district, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
  • Business plan relating to the rehabilitation of mined areas for Exxaro Resources, KwaZulu-Natal (June 2008). Phatisa prepared an assessment of alternate cropping options and a business plan for the alternatives to rehabilitate mined areas in the Hillendale area of KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Report relating to the socio-economic issues of the Exxaro Port Durnford proposed mining operation (December 2008). Phatisa conducted the agricultural economic assessment and social survey of the Port Durnford area as input into the possible application for mining rights by Exxaro Resources, KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Financial plan for the management of the Inanda and Hazelmere dams, eThekwini Metro (May 2009). Phatisa provided the financial planning and assessment for the proposed resource management plan for the management of the recreational facilities on the two dams, a function which was taken over from the Department of Water and Forestry (DWAF) by the eThekwini Metro.
  • Report relating to the commercial plan for Kia Ora Farms, for The Thorns game farm and hunting lodge in KwaZulu-Natal (August 2008). Phatisa provided the business plan for the game and hunting enterprises as part of a sale transaction of the properties for purposes of land reform.
  • Report relating to the agri business investment opportunities for the Mbonambi community (March 2009). Phatisa was engaged to present investment opportunities for the Mbonambi community, which had been awarded a ZAR 60 million land restitution settlement north of Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Report relating to the financial and institutional assessment of the pre-feasibility of the Pongolapoort public private partnership (PPP) (July 2008). Phatisa was retained to provide the financial and institutional assessment of the proposed Pongolapoort PPP with DWAF.
  • Tea Beneficiation Assessment relating to the Magwa Tea Estate (January 2009). Phatisa led a team of tea technology and marketing experts from South Africa and Japan to prepare a high-level pre-feasibility of options for mechanised harvesting and value-adding of tea on behalf of the Eastern Cape Development Corporation.
  • Report relating to the basic agricultural potential of portion 1 of lot 221 Empangeni no. 10379, Uthungulu district, KwaZulu-Natal (November 2008). Phatisa prepared a basic assessment on behalf of MSA Environmental for an agricultural property for which a developer had applied to re-zone. This was followed up in May 2009 with a Comprehensive Agricultural Assessment for the Developer.
  • Economic feasibility, financial and institutional model relating to the proposed Amajuba Herbs and Medicinal Essential Oils Project (October 2008). Phatisa was contracted by INR and together with SOiL (organic aromatherapy and skincare), prepared an economic and financial plan for the development of a Greenfields 90 ha essential oils investment opportunity in the Amajuba district of KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Report relating to the Ponderosa and Dawn Valley Farms Dairy Project proposal (August 2008). Phatisa prepared a business plan for Clover Industries for the development of a 1 000 cow dairy project on two adjacent farms in the Ixopo district, which had been acquired by the Department of Land Affairs for land reform purposes.
  • Report relating to the basic agricultural potential of Remainder Erf 761 Glenmore, South Coast, KwaZulu-Natal (June 2008). Phatisa prepared a basic assessment in support of a change in land use by a property developer.
  • Report relating to the Hlonyane Property Trust Farms' commercial plan (June 2008). Phatisa was retained to prepare a business plan and outline a joint venture structure with commercial operators for the game farming, dairy and vegetable operations on two properties transferred to the Hlonyane community under the land restitution programme.
  • Financial and market analysis relating to the development of the Ezinqoleni Tea Tree Oil Project (February 2008). Phatisa prepared the financial and business ownership structure for this proposed 1 000 ha project together with the initial 100 ha phase one development in the Ugu district of KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Report relating to the change of agricultural land use and impact on developing agricultural land for Tongaat Hulett Developments (October 2007). Phatisa was retained by Tongaat Hulett Developments to propose options for the strategic approach in the long term development of existing sugar estates, destined to be converted to commercial and residential development in terms of new environmental legislation and planning guidelines.
  • Business plan formation of a BEE company for Mtunzini Organic Oils (November 2007). Phatisa participated with SOiL (organic aromatherapy and skincare) and a commercial farmer, partially funded by the EU Gijima Fund, to design and facilitate the establishment of a BEE essential oils business, integrating communal farmers and commercial farmers into the value chain.
  • Report relating to the KZN Tea Resuscitation Project, Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal (May 2007). Phatisa developed a strategic and financial plan for the revitalisation of the Ntingwe Tea Estate in KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Financial analysis relating to the Ugu Business Information Portal Project (March 2008). Phatisa prepared the financial plan for the development of a web-based business information platform to facilitate investment and job creation in the Ugu district of KwaZulu-Natal.   
  • Status report relating to the Ntingwe Tea Estate (September 2006). Phatisa prepared a report on the status of the transfer in ownership of the Ntingwe Tea Estate on behalf of the Board of the company, and proposed actions to conclude the transaction.
  • Report relating to agricultural concepts for possible inclusion in the Shongweni Strategic Development Framework, Moreland (March 2007). Phatisa was retained by Tongaat Hulett Developments to propose options for retaining some agricultural activity on existing 3 000 ha sugar estates, destined to be converted to commercial and residential development.
  • Specialist report relating to Dube TradePort Agricultural Issues, Institute of Natural Resources (April 2007). Phatisa provided the agricultural specialist input for the EIA for the King Shaka International Airport.
  • Report relating to structure proposals for the Bulwer Mondi/Mondi-Shanduka Farms (March 2007). Phatisa prepared proposals for consideration by Mondi-Shanduka for pursuing land reform with communities living near or adjacent to the plantations.
  • Report relating to the status of corporate governance practiced within Creighton Dairies (March 2008). On behalf of the Board, Phatisa prepared an assessment of the status of corporate governance of the company and recommended areas for improvement.
  • Report relating to the review of the MAFISA Pilot Programme, Nationa Department of Agriculture (NDA) (May 2008). Following its contribution to the review of the strategic plan for the implementation of the Micro Agricultural Finance Institutions of South Africa and the design of the pilot project and financial products on behalf of the NDA, Phatisa was again retained by the NDA to review the pilot programme and propose improvements for a full roll-out.
